Gottfried Helnwein Part 1 and 2

I believe that this image taken by Gottfried Helnwein depicts a man working on a mural or billboard. From what I can tell, the art that he is working on seems to be of a young child who has a type of white filter on her face and the photo does not look to be photoshopped. From my perspective, this image seems to portray the effects of the real world on a child's innocence. The child depicted seems to have a look of betrayal in her eyes. This may be a take on the influence of world problems, such as war, poverty, and social media abuse, on a child's well-being and free spirit. The image really speaks to me, coming across as an emotional piece of art that most people can relate to and understand. The difference in scale between the man and the girl's face adds meaning to the photo by showing how people and problems can "walk all over" a child, destroying their innocence and in turn, making them grow up faster than they should need to.

Now, seeing the whole image, I am better able to understand the meaning and emotion behind the picture. I still believe that this picture is depicting the effects of real-world problems, such as war and world hunger, on a child's innocence. In the picture, there is a little girl shown from the chin and up with pale skin, possibly covered in some sort of white paint, blue eyes, and blonde hair. The little girl is looking into the camera and seems to have a look of betrayal, sadness, and horror in her eyes. The large size of the image represents how big the problem presented is. Children all over the world are subjected to horrible world problems, affecting their childhood. From what I can see the photograph is one continuous photo, but the mural is spliced together. This means that the painter painted section by section of the piece of work, probably in order to include more detail. I believe that the image's location is in an urban area because it looks to be in a city. The people who see this mural would come from all over the world, whether they are living in the area or are visiting from somewhere else. However, the intended audience would probably be people who had a rough childhood and can relate to the emotion that the girl is showing (she has a melancholy look on her face), or people sympathetic to those people. Lastly, I think that the title, "The Last Girl", suggests that the girl pictured had probably gone through a tragic event with several other girls, such as human trafficking, and was the last girl to be effected. The title may also suggest that the girl pictured may have been involved in a situation that made her have to quickly begin acting like an adult, depriving her of her childhood.
